Criteria for filter selection
Breathing filters protect you from a wide range of known pollutants that can cause health problems if inhaled: Toxic gases, vapours or particles, as well as many combinations whose harmful effects start immediately or later.
The most commonly used filters are those of the ABEK type, which protect against several hazardous substances at the same time due to their broad protection. Based on EN standard 14387, these filters have a range of use identified by the codes A, B, E and K.
Advantages for the user are: Safe selection, no mix-ups, economical procurement and easier stocking.
High-performance multigrade filters have an even wider range of applications, e.g. the combination filters 93 ABEK CO NO Hg/St or 93 A2B2E2K2 Hg/St.
Below you will find a list of examples to help you determine which hazardous substances you can protect yourself from with which filter.
The oxygen content of the breathing air must be at least 17% by volume!
The type, properties and composition of the hazardous substances in the breathing air must be known.
Local and national regulations must be observed, for example "Rules for the use of respiratory protective equipment" (BGR 190).
If gas filters are used, no particulate pollutants may be present and if particle filters are used, no harmful gases may be present, otherwise a combination filter must be used. (Combination filters protect against both gases and particles).
Filter units must not be used in enclosed spaces such as containers, ducts, etc., as these are poorly ventilated.
Only filters weighing up to 300g may be used with half and quarter masks, and up to 500g on full face masks and mouthpiece sets.
Always read the instructions for use supplied with the respirator before use.
The selection and use of a respirator is always the responsibility of the user.
Storage time of MSA filters
The following storage times can be expected for factory-sealed and properly stored gas and combination filters:
Filters of typesA, AX, B, E, K, Hg, P3: 6 years
CO, NO filters: 4 years
Particle filters: 10 years
Instructions for proper storage can be found on the packaging of the filters. The expiry date is noted on the individual filters.
Opened gas and combination filters must be replaced no later than 6 months after opening, unless they are exhausted before then.
Service life: The expiry of the service life of gas filters can be recognised by the odour and taste on the clean air side. The filters must then be replaced.
All particle or combination filters marked with "R", which are used against particles, can be used for more than one working shift. The exhaustion of particle filters can be recognised by an increase in breathing resistance.
For combination filters, both criteria must be observed, depending on the primary protective function.
When using particle filters against radioactive contaminants, spores, bacteria, viruses and proteolytic enzymes, only P3 filters with full-face masks or mouthpiece sets may be used for single use.
Some filters have a specific maximum usage time (CO filter cartridges, combination filters 93 Hg/hr).
Filters used for protection against hazardous gases, where the end of the period of use cannot be detected by odour, taste or change of surface, are subject to special regulations on duration and use, which depend on the type of use. Otherwise, protection independent of the ambient air must be used.
In addition, the following workplace and user-dependent conditions of use influence the service life of the filter respirator:
Breathing frequency - The higher the breathing frequency, the higher the contamination rate of the filter.
Ambient air temperature - The higher the temperature, the shorter the service life of the filter.
Air humidity - The higher the air humidity, the lower the absorption capacity of activated carbon against organic gases and vapours
Mixtures of hazardous substances - Less absorbent components in the activated carbon can be replaced by components that have a higher absorption capacity
